The big news last week in the world of cartooning was that Cathy Guisewite, creator of the comic strip Cathy, is retiring her strip in October 2010 after 34 years … and since Cathy appears in over 1,400 newspapers, its departure offers a rare opportunity for up and coming strips like Retail.
So, if your local newspaper carries Cathy, now would be a great time to write to them and suggest Retail as a replacement. I’d like to think my strip does a good job depicting women in the workplace in its own right … hmm, maybe this would be a good time to rename the strip “Marla.”
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me in this regard, and congratulations to Cathy Guisewite on an impressive and successful run.

I don’t think a single newspaper in Iceland carries Cathy – otherwise I’d write asap! Love Retail…
Are they actually going to stop carrying Cathy or are they just going to run 34 years of reruns like every other comic that has retired in the last few years?
Universal Press Syndicate has said “Cathy” will not be rerun in print.
In that case I will see what I can do. My local papers are pretty small though.
Gonna have to get in touch with the Bismarck Tribune so they can start carrying Retail.
Is there specific contact information to give to our newspapers?
@Laridian
Just let them know that Retail is distributed by King Features Syndicate. They’ll know how to get in contact with them if they’re interested.
Thank you!
Just sent a note to one of the papers via snail mail.
Norm is there any chance that you’ll pay tribute to Cathy’s retirement in “Retail”?
Thanks to all who have sent letters to their newspapers! Every little bit helps!
@Marc
I was already well into my October strips when I heard the news, so it’s too late for me to put in a “Goodbye Cathy” strip … but I’m sure there will be no shortage of other cartoonists paying tribute.
I will post this to my facebook and blog too.
