As of January 1st, 2010 Retail will be 4 years old. Ironically, I think that’s longer than I held any single retail job during my 15 year career before I quit or the company went under. Thank goodness I now have a job within the safety and security of the newspaper industry!
Anyhoo! In celebration of its 4th birthday, I’ll be sharing my favorite strips from the first year of Retail here on the site throughout January. I haven’t decided if I’m going to put them in the blog, or post them on Gill’s off days in the comics window. Let me know in the comments here if anyone has a preference. Either way, it won’t interfere with Gill’s slackass regular schedule.
Below is the very first Retail strip. It originally ran on 1/1/06. I stacked the panels vertically here to make it easy to read. Note the first two “throw-away” panels. I designed Retail in the traditional re-stackable newspaper format for the first 6 months or so of the strip’s run. I changed the format when I realized that not a single Sunday paper was even using the throw-aways. I was literally throwing away a quarter of my work every week, never to be seen by anyone …. until now, I guess.
I have to confess that the artwork in these early strips is painful for me to look at, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come over the years. I feel like my work has improved dramatically, and I still learn new things every day.
More to come in January!
