It’s funny how we perceive older people as stupid. I guess those know-it-all teenage years never really leave us.

Seeing Stuart’s design in these early strips fascinates me for some reason.

I guess that’s where his nickname, “Zucchini Head”, came from.

Not stupid, just senile, and out of touch with technology. Which, you know, some of them actually are.

This strip was actually inspired by a real story my brother-in-law’s father told me.

After he retired, he took a job as a Wal-Mart door greeter for a while. During his tenure there, they had a problem with one of their electric scooters constantly breaking down. Every time, they’d have to call corporate and wait days for them to send somebody out to fix it.

Finally, one day after it broke down for the umpteenth time, my brother-in-law’s father said, “Oh the hell with calling them up. Let me take a look at it.” He took it apart and had it running again in no time. The other employees were amazed that he knew how to fix it.

Before he retired, he used to repair X-Ray equipment. He’s a handy guy in general. Installed solar panels on his house way back before it was cool.

Knowing how to use an iPod is great … but it doesn’t necessarily make one “in touch with technology”.

The Chinese think of their elders as being wise. Why does our culture think the opposite?

Great strip. I worked with a 76 year old woman who managed to do more than most. She definitely knew more than most. A lot of the talent is in common sense and responsibility.

Technology comes and goes. What makes your head swell up with pride in one decade is unusable in the next.

In my experience, working with old people is a hit and miss situation. I actually like working with OLDER people, rather than MIDDLE AGED people. I always find that I end up covering more for the 40-60 range employee more that the 60+ where I work.
