Author Visits

Presentation for Grades K – 2 (45 minutes)
In my presentation, I briefly talk about my love of reading, what inspired me to become an author/illustrator and how I accomplished that as a self-taught artist. We explore what a graphic novel is, and how they are made, from story, to sketches, to final art. I read my Geisel Honor winning book Beak & Ally: Unlikely Friends. Then, I end the presentation with an interactive draw-along activity. My goal is to encourage artistic exploration, and reinforce the fun of reading.

Presentation for Grades 3 – 6 (45 minutes)
In my presentation, I talk about my upbringing, love of reading, what inspired me to become an author/illustrator and how I accomplished that as a self-taught artist. I share a selection of comic strips from my days as a syndicated cartoonist where I turned my personal experiences into daily comic strips for 15 years. I talk about how my desire to tell longer stories lead me to writing graphic novels for early readers and middle grade. We explore how a graphic novel is made, from manuscript, to sketches, to final art. I end the presentation with a reading of the first chapter of my latest graphic novel, A Kid Like Me. My hope is for students to come away knowing that their personal experiences and viewpoints are a superpower when it comes to storytelling, visual or otherwise.
